Purpose
The purpose of the North Carolina Baptist Men Agricultural Ministry is to help Christians share the love of Jesus by becoming involved in missions that address poverty and hunger wherever they exist.
How To Start a Garden in Your Home or Church
Ag Demonstration Farm
The farm was established at Buies Creek in 1985 on 15 acres of land made available to NC Baptist Men by Campbell University. The farm has a home for the farm manager and a large storage building to house farm equipment, livestock, feed and fertilizer. Much of the equipment, building, and fences were provided through generous gifts and voluntary services by NC Baptists.
Purpose of the Demonstration Farm
- Demonstrate food production practices common in developing countries.
- Test and evaluate new transferable technologies that missionaries can use overseas.
- Encourage North Carolina Baptists and others to be concerned about nutritional problems in NC and throughout the world.
- Provide agricultural education opportunities for Baptist groups and others with classroom and/or hands-on activities.
- Provide Campbell University with opportunities to enhance its instructional program
Examples of Current Projects at the Farm
- Raised Garden Beds: This gardening system maximizes the use of space, nutrients, and labor by incorporating manure from rabbits, chickens, other animals, and decayed plant material into a 4 ft. by 10 ft. raised bed. Dense planting minimizes weed competition.
- Bucket Drip-Irrigation System: This inexpensive system maximizes the use of a precious resource, water, the most limiting factor in crop production.
- Small Animals: These include rabbits, Nubian goats, Katahdin sheep, pigeons, ducks, fish, and chickens. Simple appropriate technologies relevant to their production are demonstrated.
- Tropical Garden Crops: Various tropical crops are grown for educational purposes and to produce seed for ECHO (Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization)
