ROCKY MOUNTAIN WORK & WITNESS SPECIAL PROJECT
NEW HOPE COMMUNITY CHURCH CONSTRUCTION in SOUTH FORK, COLORADO
What?
Construction of a one-story educational building that will include classrooms, fellowship hall, kitchen, and office space (approx. 6000 sq ft.)
Where?
South Fork, Colorado. At an elevation of 8,190 feet, South Fork is located at the southern end of the Silver Thread Scenic Byway. It is located approximately ninety miles northeast of Durango. Originally a center of mining and lumber activity, the town's economy is now primarily fueled by tourism and recreation. The population of 1200 grows to more than 4000 during the summer. The growing congregation at New Hope is in need of space for education and ministry to a rapidly changing community. The church, a member of the Continental Divide Baptist Association, has begun raisiing needed funds.
Who?
Volunteer Construction TeamsTeams of 10-20 adults are needed to complete all phases of the building project. Each team should have a “core” of volunteers who have solid construction experience and know-how. We will try to schedule up to 25 volunteers per week, so there may be more than one team serving per week, depending on the size of the teams. Sharon White will coordinate meals. Each team needs to bring two people to assist her.
When?
Spring and Summer 2009
The project is set to begin in late May and run through early September 2009.
How?
Teams will sign up for a date and corresponding construction phase through North Carolina Baptist Men. When an assignment is made, the team leader will maintain contact with David White, who will be on-site coordinator along with his wife Sharon for the time North Carolina teams are there. Each team member will register with NC Baptist Men, and be signed up for the volunteer insurance ( $5 per person).
Field Costs:
Teams will arrange their own travel. Driving is certainly an option. Albuquerque, New Mexico is approximately 225 miles; Denver is 230 miles, and Colorado Springs is 200 miles. Denver and Albuquerque would offer the best airfare rates.Van rental runs between $400-500 for a week (mini-van), or $800 for a full sized van. Housing will be available for teams at a nearby hunting lodge. Twelve dollars ($12) per person per day covers the cost of three meals. Sharon White will coordinate the purchase of food and the cooking of meals for the teams.
Other Costs:
Each team will be encouraged to provide $2000 toward the purchase of building materials for the project if possible.
