MISKITO CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Part of the NC/Honduras construction project will be conducted in the Miskito area of Honduras with missionary Jim Palmer. The purpose is construction of a new church building.
DATES: Two teams are scheduled for 2006: May 27-June 3; and June 3-10
TRIP COST: The price of the trip is $1450 per person. This includes round-trip airfare, insurance, in-country chartered flight, in-country transportation, lodging, most meals, building materials cost, orientation materials, and T-shirt. You will need to take an additional $30 cash with you for airport exit tax, plus money for souvenirs you may want to buy.
TEAM: The team will be comprised of 15 members. (Team must have 15 members to make the price for charter flight and building materials work out.) These teams will be filled from volunteers from across North Carolina. The team needs at least 5-6 members who are strong in construction skills (block laying, carpentry, electrical, plumbing). The team will also need two people to serve as cooks. Applicants must be a least 18 years old to participate.
PARTICIPATION: Those wishing to participate should do the following:
Go to the “Opportunities to Serve” section under “Honduras” and sign up for the project by either clicking on the “sign in” or “reserve” button at the bottom of the desired project page. Send a deposit of $400 to the NC Baptist Men’s Office no later than, Friday March 17. Submit the $1050 balance no later than Friday, April 21. Once tickets are purchased, they are non-refundable and non-transferable. Make checks payable to Baptist State Convention of NC; sent to PO Box 1107, Cary, NC 27512 Memo: Miskito Project (and date of trip).
TRAVEL: All travel will be arranged by the Partnership Office. Securing tickets through a group rate may dictate that the team leave from one airport in North Carolina (probably either Raleigh or Charlotte).
HEALTH: Team members must be in good physical health. Anyone with a chronic medical condition should not volunteer for this project. Areas of work will be quite hot. Volunteers will need to make sure the following shots are up to date: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and Tetanus. Malaria pills are also required. Tell whomever administers your shots that you will be traveling to Honduras and serving in Puerto Lempira in the Gracias A Dios area (far eastern state of Honduras). They may suggest other shots. This is up to you.
LIVING AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Those participating in this effort must be very flexible. Travel, living, and working conditions may be difficult at times. The work may be strenuous and the climate will be hot. Team will be sleeping on army cots, take bag showers (or bathe in nearby lagoon), and use pit latrines.
OTHER: Smoking, chewing tobacco, and drinking alcoholic beverages is highly offensive to Honduran Christians. Team members must refrain from these activities while in Honduras.
