Baptists On Mission

Good Shepherd Children's Home

IICD (International Indigenous Community Development) is partnering with the North Carolina Baptist Children's Home, North Carolina Baptist Men (NCBM), and a Guatemalan charity to help start a children's home for disenfranchised children. A Guatemalan organization with more than one hundred years of effective service to the poor has lent IICD the use of an excellent building for 20 years for this children's ministry. There is work to be done in order to prepare the building for the children.

Volunteers and teams are needed throughout 2014 in the following ways:

Children's Home Construction and Maintenance Teams
♦  Community Evangelism Teams  ♦
Children's Home Assistants

Teams of 8-12 will serve from Saturday to Saturday throughout most of the year. Click here to see a current date list. NCBM will secure airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and all logistics for the team. Costs will vary somewhat depending on the current cost of airfare and the number of volunteers on the team. Click here to see additional information about potential costs.

Here are some reports and pictures from teams who have served at the Children's Home in 2014:

GU14-104 Green Level BC - North Carolina (1/14) GU14-111 Philadelphia BC - North Carolina (3/14)
GU14-113 Macon Bapt. Assoc. North Carolina (4/14)

For more information, or to set up a date and project for your team, please contact Mark Abernathy at NC Baptist Men - 919-459-5607 or mabernathy@ncbaptist.org. Once team leader secures a project date, each team member will register online. A deposit of $300 per person will be due no less than 60 days prior to the date of departure. Balance will be due 30 days prior to departure. All volunteers over the age of 18 serving at the children's home will be required to have a professional background check.

Children’s Home Construction and Maintenance Teams
Teams of 8-12 are needed to do repairs and general maintenance at a new Children’s Home in central Guatemala. Tasks may include repairing, spackling, and painting of walls; tile repair and replacement in bathrooms and kitchen; general cleaning of the building; gardening and landscaping, etc. One immediate need is the construction of a cement block security wall around the perimeter of the property. Wall teams would need a couple of masons and a few helpers. Flexibility is a must, as it may be impossible to know exactly what task teams will be doing until a week or two before your team arrives. As time draws nearer, missionary will be in touch with team leader concerning the status of the project and options for team tasks, depending on need. NCBM will arrange for airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and other logistics, including transportation to and from the airport, daily transportation, and lodging. Most teams will live at the Good Shepherd Center (as Guatemalan regulation does not allow visitors to live at the Children's Home). Team will prepare breakfast at the Center, and prepare and take bag lunches with them to the worksite. Team may prepare supper at the Center, or can eat out some nights in restaurants. Background checks will be required of any volunteer serving at the Children's Home. NCBM will send information concerning background checks.

Community Evangelism Teams
Teams of 8-10 are needed to conduct Backyard Bible Club ministry with younger children in the morning and older children in the afternoon (or vice versa, depending on school schedule) in strategic communities in Quetzaltenango. Other outreach ministries are possible, depending on the team’s giftedness, and could include sports ministry, music, ministry to women (teaching a craft or other skill), and ministry to men (based on men’s interest activity). Once team is formed, team leader will work out specific ministries with local missionary contacts. Volunteers will stay at the Good Shepherd Center and travel into surrounding communities for ministry each day. NCBM will arrange for airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and other logistics, including transportation to and from the airport, daily transportation, and lodging. Team will prepare breakfast at the Center, and prepare and take lunch with them daily, and prepare supper at the Center or eat out in restaurants some nights. Team will need to bring ministry supplies with them. Background checks will be required of any volunteer working with children. NCBM will send information concerning the background checks.

Children’s Home Assistants
Couples and/or individuals are needed to serve as assistants at a new Children's Home that is being developed in Central Guatemala. Length of service will be from one to three months at a time. Volunteers will assist the Children's Home directors in whatever tasks are needed. This may include cleaning, maintenance, painting, cooking, washing clothes, landscaping, or any other number of tasks. Volunteers will live on-site at the Children's Home in a small facility known as the "Cabe House". NCBM will arrange for airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, and other logistics, including transportation to and from the airport. Once on-site, volunteers will utilize local transportation as needed. Volunteers will purchase their own food and prepare most meals at the Cabe House. Costs will include airfare, volunteer missionary insurance, food, some transportation costs, and a small amount to help with utilities cost. Background checks will be required of any volunteer serving at the Children’s Home. NCBM will send information concerning background checks.

Additional Needs: We are in need of churches, SS classes, or individuals who would help in furnishing the facility with beds, tables, chairs, cribs, curtains, etc. Anyone interested should contact Mark Abernathy @ 1-800-395-5102 x 5607; 919-459-5607; mabernathy@ncbaptist.org.

Costs for Ministry Teams:

Total cost will be dependent on: 1) number of members on the team, and 2) the current cost of airfare. Field costs include lodging, in-country transportation, building/ministry materials, orientation, and insurance. It also includes an estimate of $200 for all meals, which each person will take down with them. (True costs of these meals may be slightly less or more, depending on where the team chooses to eat.) Airfare typically runs from $600 to $850, depending on time of year. A valid passport (must have at least six months remaining) and some immunizations are required. Here is an estimate based on two possible ticket price ranges. This is provided just to give an idea of price range.
