Medical Team - Guatemala
A small surgical/medical team (2 surgeons; internal medicine/cardiologist/endocrinologist; and pediatrician) is needed to operate out of a small (40 bed) public hospital in the town of Uspantan in the rural interior of Guatemala. The dates of service will be the week of July 21-28, 2012. This small hospital covers the Uspantan and surrounding village area, as well as the newly settled Zona Reina. Some patients will come from long distances to be seen. The hospital has two small operating rooms that are currently not in use due to lack of trained personnel. We are looking for those in the following specialties who can meet these parameters:
--2 opthalmologic surgeons, with all of their equipment, medications, supplies. (the medical director advises that surgeries will be pterygiiums, cataracts, etc.) OR
--2 plastic surgeons, with all of their equipment, medications, supplies. (They will need to bring an anesthesiologist. The medical director advises that patients with cleft palate and lip, or other cosmetic conditions will be contacted if these are able to come) OR --one of any of the above, plus a general surgeon with anesthesiologist, bringing all of his equipment, medications, supplies able to perform herniorrhaphies, cholecystectomies, etc.

--an internal medicine/cardiologist/endocrinologist and pediatrician, with all of their needed medications, supplies, and equipment
This team will be responsible for 1) seeing patients in their specialties; 2) making strong, positive, Christian relationships with the hospital staff; 3) teaching the staff new skills and evidence-based practice; and 4) evaluating the hospital's physical capabilities for a larger medical/dental/eye team to be brought in the summer of 2013. Translators will be provided. Housing will be at a small hotel in Uspantan. The team will work in direct conjunction with IMB missionaries and a large new church in Uspantan. All physicians responding will need to send appropriate documentation as soon as possible so that a short-term medical licensure can be obtained from the Guatemalan Medical Association. This will be an additional cost, but it is minimal. The hospital will solicit a letter from the Public Health System so that all equipment, medications, supplies, will enter the country, duty-free. We would like to have the team formed as soon as possible in order to give the hospital administrator knowledge of the team’s specialties so potential patients in remote areas can be notified.
North Carolina Baptist Men will make logistical and flight arrangements for the team. Approximate cost for in-country logistics (hotel, food, ground transportation, volunteer insurance) will be $550 per person. Full trip cost will depend on price of airline tickets at the time they are ordered. Airline tickets have been running between $650 and $850 per person. Each team member will be made aware of airline cost and a close estimate of final cost before tickets are finalized.
