Deep Impact Honduras Update: (Monday, June 29 @ 11:01 am)
The Deep Impact team left the camp this morning around 6:30 am. They made it to the airport with no interruptions. Mike Sowers reported seeing nothing out of the ordinary on the trip in. Things are apparently busy at the airport with lots of police and news reporters. The group has checked into their flight, cleared security, and are waiting at the terminal to fly out as scheduled! Thanks for your continued prayers.
Deep Impact Honduras Update: (Sunday, June 28 @ 10:05 pm)
The Deep Impact team spent the day at the camp and are preparing for a good night's sleep ahead of an early departure for the airport tomorrow morning.
The Honduran Congress swore in a provisional president this afternoon. While there was some isolated demonstrations outside of the presidential residence, most of Tegucigalpa was calm. It is expected that a curfew will be put in place beginning at 9:00 pm tonight through 6:00 am tomorrow morning. All the major American airlines flew in and out of Tegucigalpa today (American, Continental, and Delta). Pray that the team will get a good night's rest and that the trip to the airport in the morning will be an uneventful one.
Deep Impact Honduras Update: (Sunday, June 28 @ 1:35 pm)
By now most of you have heard from your team leader that the Honduran military arrested the president of Honduras and have taken over control of the country. This happened early Sunday morning. You can go to CNN or other web news agency for further details.
Mike Sowers, NC Baptist Men Consultant for Youth Missions, has been in country with the team all week, along with our in-country on-site coordinators. Together, they have been in communication with the US Embassy as events have unfolded throughout the week. I have spoken with Mike and our coordinator several times today. Our on-site coordinator, who lives in Tegucigalpa, reports that all is calm in the city. Electricity was off for a while, but has been restored. Telephone land lines and internet, however, are still down. (Actually, none of this is that out of the ordinary in Honduras!)
Everyone is safe at the camp, which is located about a thirty minute's drive outside of the capital of Tegucigalpa. Obviously, this has disrupted today's plans of worshipping in local Honduran churches and doing some site-seeing. The group enjoyed worship this morning at the camp and will hang out there for the remainder of the day. They will proceed to the airport early tomorrow morning as planned.
I want to stress that no one feels the Deep Impact team is facing any kind of personal danger. They are in a safe, remote location. The only concern has been that airline travel could be disrupted. However, I'm happy to report that American Airlines has already landed in Tegucigalpa this morning, and the others are expected to land soon.
We will keep you updated as we know more. For now, just be in prayer that all goes well with the flights in and out of the country.
