Who Makes Up the Staff?

Camp Caraway employs a staff of 29 young men during the summer. This includes 18 college-aged Camp Counselors, 2 colleged aged trip staff for CHA (Christian High Adventure), five high-school aged Counselors in training (CIT's)*, one videographer, a recreation director, an assistant director, a program director, and our camp director.  College aged staff earn $190 per week their first year on staff. High School aged staff earn $140 per week during their first year on staff. During orientation and training weeks College aged staff will earn $150 per week and High School aged staff will earn $100 per week.  Room and meals are also provided throughout the summer except during our mid summer break.  * CIT's must be at least 16 years old and be at least a rising junior in High Schoo.l

What is the Time Commitment?

The summer camp season runs about nine consecutive weeks throughout the summer, beginning June 4 and going through August 4.   Staff members are expected to work each week. A typical camp week begins at 5:00 Sunday evening with supper and staff meeting. The campers arrive on Monday morning at 10:00 and depart by 3:00 on Friday afternoon during a regular week. We also have several partial week camps and several weekend camps.  Staffers are responsible for the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of their group of boys. It is the job of each staffer to show the boys that the Christian lifestyle is carried out 24 hours a day. Each staff member gets a 2 hour break each day that we have a full day of camp. Staffers remain at camp until the camp week is completed.

What About the Weekends?

Staffers will remain at camp the weekends of orientation week to complete their training. Staffers may have to work up to half of the weekends during the summer for training and other weekend camps.   Staffers are also expected to attend the staff banquet, usually held the weekend before the last week of camp. All other weekends are free for the staff after 5:00 pm Friday or when their duties are completed. Some go home for the weekend, but many stay and enjoy relaxing at camp. Meals are provided for those staffers wishing to stay at camp for the weekend. Asheboro is a ten minute drive from camp. There is also a washer and dryer for the staff's use.  There will be a mid summer break when all staff will be required to leave camp for a brief vacation.

What Kind of Training Will I Receive?

Our administrative staff will do everything we can to prepare our staff for success.  Staff will receive a staff manual in late spring before camp begins top help mentally prepare them for the upcoming summer.  Caraway staffers are thoroughly trained to do their job. The first week and a half of the summer is an orientation and training time. During this time staffers become completely familiar with the camp program and how to lead each activity. They learn age-group characteristics, proper motivation and discipline techniques, how to lead boys spiritually, how to lead recreation and games, as well as how to be an effective Camp counselor. Staff members are also trained in first aid, CPR and basic water safety.

Why work at Camp Caraway?

You can make a real difference in shaping young lives for Christ! Camp Caraway has a rich tradition of providing a quality experience not only for the campers who attend, but also for the staff who work there. Most staffers agree that working at Caraway is the most rewarding job they have ever had. Each week you will become involved in the lives of 7-14 boys, leading them in fun, sports, recreation, and daily Bible Study and Mission Study. Maybe you will teach one of them to swim for the first time. It may be you who shows the non-athlete that he belongs. And you will have the opportunity each week to show your boys that Christ is real and alive in your life through both your verbal witness and your actions. Many boys accept Christ as their Savior at Camp Caraway. Many others leave knowing that the Christian lifestyle is real, and that can make the difference between a boy becoming a "nominal Christian" or one who dedicates himself to a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. This happens because of the love and dedication of the Caraway staff. Why don't you pray about being a part of this meaningful ministry this summer?
